Some Thoughts and Feedback from the Wireless Africa workshop 17 -21 November 08

What a great experience meeting you all in Pretoria at the last workshop. I was really happy you all enjoyed it and I look forward to your feedback on the website. Some interesting e mails from some of you:

Peterson Uganda says:

We have been in South Africa for the wireless Africa Workshop, under the wireless Africa Project representing the CWRC. Since the Wireless Africa
project looks at sustainability of telecentres, especially through appropriate business models, there was a need to have a technical representative and an entrepreneurial representative.

I was the technical guy, and Rick Kamugisha from kabale Telecentre was representing us in the entrepreneurial group. Over the last 5 days, we have undergone intensive technical and business skills training sessions that I really believe will bring a new dimension to our wireless networks,
especially in terms of how to make them sustainable.

We were accordingly separated in two different workshop groups for purposes of specialized training. But cognizant of the fact that for us to achieve the dream of sustaining the telecentres through appropriate business models both groups need to come together, we would then be put together to discuss in groups. On the technical side, We did training in the following areas that I believe will take the Community wireless networks to the next level;

  • VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
  • Network monitoring and management
  • WISPiab (WISP in a box)
  • Mesh networking

On the entrepreneurial side, they were basically looking at business planning and sustainability models (am sure Rick will share with us).
I must say it was interesting, there was so much to learn in a very short time.

Special thanks to the CWRC, WA Consortium and all the partners for the objective well attained.

And from Juma Okee, IT Officer, Canadian Physicians for Aid & Relief says:

Welcome back guys, we hope to learn alot from you.

And Kafui, Ghana says:

Please see update from my team in Ghana on the successful installation of the the first clients of the MEsh Network.

The Municipal Chief Executive who was also at the OM Workshop in Winneba, is currently connected. He called me in Taiwan to confirm he has access from the mesh. He further request us to put wireless in his house to enable him enjoy more freedom.
